1. I recommend you not try using AA batteries to power your robot. They will droop massively in most cases and cause you massive headaches trying to figure out the problem.
2. Just because you wired up encoders doesnt mean you can use them. You need to tune the PID settings to use them. But first you need to make sure simple power control will run the motors correctly.
3. If you have wired the Motor leads to the Motor channel(M1A and M1B for Channel 1 and M2A and M2B for Channel 2) you should be able to run your motors backwards and forwards using the PWM Settings screen in Motion Studio. The sliders should move the motors forwards and backwards.
