The peak current limit is set based on the unit temperature. The hotter it gets the lower the peak current limit will be until it reaches the max current limit. How long you can run at the peak limit will depend on how well the unit is cooled. If you are just hitting peak intermittently(eg for startup or brieg stall current situations) it will have little effect on overall temperature and you will get the most peak current capability(for example 60amps on a 30amp board).
