Encoders on GoBilda motors

I have a 5202 Series Yellow Jacket Planetary Gear Motor (5.2:1 Ratio, 1150 RPM, 3.3 - 5V Encoder), powering a ServoCity linear actuator kit.
I am trying to get the motor encoder to be recognized by a RoboClaw 2x15A Motor Controller.
Do the A and B signal lines from the encoder need pull-up resistors to 5V? I've read in several posts here on the forums about this sometime being needed. The documentation is sparse on the encoder and motors.
I have tried them both with (4.7K) and without, but no success.
In the Basic Micro Motion Studio application, all I see in the M1 Encoder field is a 0, 1 or 2 while the motor is running. I assumed I would be seeing a 5-digit number counting up and down as I ran the motor back and forth.

If your encoders require a pullup 4.7k should be more than sufficient. If they dont require a pullup the pullups probably wouldnt prevent them from working. How do you have the encoder powered?

You may need to look at the encoder signals with a scope to determine what the problem is.

I’m powering them with 5V from the Roboclaw.

I investigated further. I have several of these motors and tried a different one with the identical wiring setup as the first one, and the second motor's encoder works fine. So I guess the first motor has a bad encoder?

Possibly. I would still recommend looking at the signal on a scope to confiorm that is the case.
