Precharge Resistor, is soldering OK?

Post by JorgeP »

I am using a pre-charge resistor across the contacts of a constant high current relay as shown in the lower middle of the photo (green resister and metal can). I've never wired one before and would like to know if I can solder the wire to the resistor (8 awg wire) or if I should use a crimp contact for it? 24V system at 73A max battery current, about 30-40A running current.

Do I need to use a wire size to the resistor that is high current or can 14-16AWG be safe enough?

Thank you in advance for your response.

The maximum current through the resistor is voltage/resistance. You can determine wire gauge from that but you will probably be able to use something quite small.

If its a perminent installation I'd solder and wrap the leads(heat shrink tubing).
