Feature Request: Studio app for Linux

Post by James »

I would like to propose that you release your Studio app for Linux.
I think almost everyone using a RoboClaw or MCP (especially in research) pairs them with either an RC receiver, or a Raspberry or similar SBC. It would be nice to be able to configure our boards from our laptop, instead of having to run round asking to borrow a windowz laptop just to configure the controller...

Is there a crucial component of the app that is .NET-only and impossible to implement on Linux?

1. We do plan on it as soon as we have the manpower or man hours available. Maybe not a full Motion Studio app but something that would allow the majority of settings to be adjusted/saved.

2. It may seem a large number of people using Roboclaw are using Linux but in my own experience, doing tech support for our entire customer base, I mark it at 1% to 2% on the high side.

P.S. One work around if you are using a x86 machine at least, is to run a VM with Windows. For example https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/m ... tools/vms/

Perhaps us Linux fellows don't need to resort to bothering you with every little details, that's why you see a small amount of requests - which is good.

If you say the app works reliably under virtualization, then I will try. I was afraid hardware interfacing (the COM ports in particular) might not go through the VM properly.
Thx!

Ha. That could be. :)

Reliably? The trick is setting up the USB port access. But I've had several users do it. Was it easy? That will depend on your perspective and experience.

I'd like to second this request; though, perhaps I can suggest one additional feature when this happens, a command line version of the firmware update code.

My particular use case is wireless deployment of dozens of MCPs each connected via a headless Raspberry Pi 4.
When firmware changes happen, it would be extremely beneficial to update all of our hardware remotely through the command line in Linux as opposed to physically connecting to each one individually to do the update.

I understand the desire, but this isn't likely to happen and I dont want to give false hopes.
