Feature Request: Studio app for Linux

Post by James » Thu Jan 16, 2020 9:19 am

I would like to propose that you release your Studio app for Linux.
I think almost everyone using a RoboClaw or MCP (especially in research) pairs them with either an RC receiver, or a Raspberry or similar SBC. It would be nice to be able to configure our boards from our laptop, instead of having to run round asking to borrow a windowz laptop just to configure the controller...

Is there a crucial component of the app that is .NET-only and impossible to implement on Linux?

1. We do plan on it as soon as we have the manpower or man hours available. Maybe not a full Motion Studio app but something that would allow the majority of settings to be adjusted/saved.

2. It may seem a large number of people using Roboclaw are using Linux but in my own experience, doing tech support for our entire customer base, I mark it at 1% to 2% on the high side.

P.S. One work around if you are using a x86 machine at least, is to run a VM with Windows. For example https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/m ... tools/vms/

Perhaps us Linux fellows don't need to resort to bothering you with every little details, that's why you see a small amount of requests - which is good.

If you say the app works reliably under virtualization, then I will try. I was afraid hardware interfacing (the COM ports in particular) might not go through the VM properly.
Thx!

Ha. That could be. :)

Reliably? The trick is setting up the USB port access. But I've had several users do it. Was it easy? That will depend on your perspective and experience.
